It is the policy of the Guelph Public Library to offer a
full range of library services to all residents of the community
in a welcoming and safe environment. Library users have a right
to use library facilities free from harassment, physical discomfort,
danger, or emotional stress. Library staff have the same rights.
While working to keep regulations and restrictions to a minimum, the
Guelph Public Library Board has identified a number of unacceptable
behaviours. Included are behaviours that constitute a crime, impinge
on the rights of others, or result in damage to library buildings,
collections, or equipment. As approved by the Guelph Public Library
Board (July 1, 2002), no person shall…

1. Intentionally damage, destroy, steal, alter or misuse any library
property (including computer programs, software, or networks) or a
patron or employee’s property.

2. Fail to provide responsible supervision as necessary for children
and/or adults under their care.
|
3. Engage in any form of disruptive behaviour, language, or noise
making which materially disrupts the use of the library facility by
others, invades the rights of others, or disrupts the regular and
essential operation of the library.

4. Post notices, distribute circulars or petitions, solicit, sell, or
engage in any commercial activity on library property, save with the
express permission of the Public Library Board.

5. Enter the library while not wearing shoes and a shirt.
The use of sports equipment is not permitted in the library.

6. Bathe or wash clothes in the washrooms. Library materials
may not be taken into washrooms.
|
7. Exhibit bodily hygiene so offensive as to constitute a
nuisance to other customers or staff.
|
8. Bring animals, other than assistive animals, into the library.
|
9. Eat or drink in non-designated areas.
|
Library staff is empowered to intervene to prohibit any of
the activities or behaviours listed above. Violations of these
standards may result in cost-recovery charges, removal of library
privileges and prosecution. Library staff will, at all times,
endeavour to apply these rules in a fair and reasonable manner.
They anticipate and appreciate their customers’ assistance in creating
an enjoyable, productive and welcoming library environment.
