Contact the Library?
There are many ways to reach us! We are available by phone, in person, by e-mail or online chat.
If you have a question, you can phone us at 519-824-6220, or visit us in person at any library location during our open hours.
Get a library card?
A Library card is your entry point to all of the resources, programs and services at the Guelph Public Library. In addition to borrowing library materials, a library card allows you to download eBooks and eAudiobooks, search our digital resources, register for programs, and much more.
To sign up for a card, visit any Guelph Public Library location. Library cards are free of charge for anyone who lives or owns property in Guelph. Identification and proof of Guelph address are required.
Library cards are available for a fee to non-residents. The current fee is $50 for six months or $100 for a twelve month family membership.
Find items? Search the Catalogue?
There is a search box at the top right of every page on our website from which you can search our catalogue.
Enter your search terms and check "catalogue" before clicking on the magnifying glass. You may enter an author's name, title words or a subject term.
A link to our catalogue is also available through the green Search Tab at the top of each page.
Keyword, browse and advanced search options are available.

Renew an Item?
The Guelph Public Library allows up to 3 renewals per item. Renewals are not allowed on items requested by other borrowers.
Renewals may be done in person at any library location, by phone at 519-824-6220, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.Items may also be renewed online through your Patron Account:
- Library Card: type in the numbers of your library card barcode
- Password: type in your four digit PIN number(default PIN is the last 4 digits of your library card #)
- Select the Items Out tab
- Check the box beside the items you would like to renew
- Click on Renew Selected Items (bottom of page)
- If an item is not eligible for renewal, a message will be displayed informing you the item is not renewed
Check my account?
There is a link at the top right of all pages on our website to "My Account" from which you can check your due dates and fines, renew items, or change your PIN.
From within the catalogue, you may click on the Patron Account tab to access your account.
Place a hold?
You may place an item on hold for pickup at any of our locations, or add your name to a waiting list for popular items. Holds may be placed on any library catalogue computer, or from your own computer, laptop, tablet or smart phone by searching the catalogue through our website.
- Find the item in our catalogue
- Click on Place Request
- Do not choose to request a particular copy unless you would like a specific copy of a magazine or DVD set
- Enter your library barcode and password (PIN)
- Select your Pickup Library
- Request First Available Copy or This Item Only if you are requesting a specific issue or item
- We will contact you when your item is available for pickup. You can choose to be contacted via phone, e-mail or text. You may change your preferred method of receiving library notices in your Patron Account.
There is a limit of 20 requested items per library card at any given time.
If you need an item right away and it has the status of Check Shelves or Just Returned, please phone the library at 519-824-6220 and request that it be put aside for you.
Borrow from the library?
Remember to bring your library card with you when you visit the Guelph Public Library. Your library card is required to borrow items, place requests, use library internet computers, and access our digital resources.
Most items have a 21 day loan period and may be renewed if they have not been requested by another library member. Some items, such has DVDs, have a 7 day loan period. Please consult our Borrowing Policies for details on loan periods, limits and fees.
Borrow from Another Library System?
If you cannot find the item you want in our catalogue, you can try to borrow it from another library system through our new Self-Serve InterLibrary Loan service. There is no charge for this service, unless the loaning institution charges fees or shipping charges. You will be contacted if there is a charge before the request is processed. Unfortunately, items published within the last year cannot be requested through InterLibrary Loan.

Suggest a purchase?
The Guelph Public Library welcomes your suggestions for additions to our collection. Before submitting a suggestion, please check our catalogue to make sure the library does not already own the title.
If you would like to suggest an item, please fill out the Suggested Purchase form.
Items can be returned to any library or Bookmobile stop. After hours book drop boxes are available at the Main Library, East Side and Westminster Square branches. There is an additional book drop available at the West End Branch which is only available when the Recreation Centre is open.
DVDs, CDs, Playaways, and eReaders must be returned during library open hours as they may become damaged in the book drops.
If you choose e-mail or text message as your preferred method of receiving library notices, we will remind you of the date your outstanding items are due back at the library. Your Contact Information and Preferences can be set through your Patron Account.
Pay a Fine?
Library materials can be borrowed free of charge as long as they are returned by their due date.
If items returned late, fines are charged and can be paid at any library location. Lost and damaged items are also subject to charges for the value of the item plus processing fees.
The methods of payments we accept are debit, cash and Visa.

There is a charge applied to any item kept past its due date. In extreme cases, it is Library Board policy to use the services of a collection agency to recover outstanding accounts. For your information, the fee schedule :

Library items not returned within 45 days of the initial due date will automatically be assumed lost. Handling fees for lost items (listed below), include overdue fines and will be added to the cost of the item.
The handling fee for each damaged item (not including fines ) is $5.00. This will be added to the replacement cost of the item.
If outstanding fines exceed $10.00, borrowing privileges will be suspended until fines are paid.
Reserves and Holds
If an item you wish to borrow is currently signed out, you can place the item on reserve. This can be done using our in-house catalogue terminals or from home using our web-based catalogue. You will be notified by automated phone call or email when your reserved item has arrived. A $1.00 charge will be applied to reserves that are not picked up within seven (7) days.
* The Library no longer charges for the processing of Inter-Library Loan requests. However, borrowers using this service should be aware that lending libraries may impose a charge. You will be asked if you are willing to pay and to what amount, before the Inter-Library Loan request is sent. You will be notified as soon as your requested item has arrived.
Extensive Information Research
Charges for extended searches begin at $30 per hour. Requests for answers to complex information queries should be discussed with the Head of Information Services - Steven Kraft. He will provide an estimate of all related charges prior to commencing research.
Register for a Program?
The Guelph Public Library offers many programs of interest to library members of ages. Please consult our Calendar of Events for descriptions of upcoming library events.
You may register for our library programs in person, by phone at 519-824-6220, or through our events calendar. A valid Guelph Public Library card is required for online registration.
Join a Book Club?
The Guelph Public Library hosts several book clubs of interest to various age groups at many library locations in both daytime and evening sessions. We also provide services and resources to book clubs in the community, including the loan of book club title sets which may be reserved for your group to read and discuss.

Donate to the library?
We appreciate your choice to support the Guelph Public Library. There are many ways you can contribute to the continued success and well-being of the library, including financial support, joining the Friends of the Library, volunteering, or making a donation of materials.
If you would like to make a donation of used books, CDs or DVDs, they may be dropped off at any library location. Donated items may be added to our collection as per our Collection Development Policy. Material that we are unable to add to our collection may be sold at the Friends Annual Book Sale, or on our book sale carts within the library. Proceeds from these sales directly benefit the library.
Material in poor condition, dated items, or textbooks, cannot generally be added to our collection and often cannot be sold through the book sale.
Download eBooks and audiobooks?
eBooks, eAudiobooks and Music are all available to download to your computer, laptop or portable device from our digital collections. A valid Guelph Public Library card is required to access these resources. Visit the OverDrive Help page to get started with downloading popular eBook titles.
Are you considering buying an eReader? Place a hold on one of our Kobo eReaders and see what the eBook world is all about. We offer eReaders preloaded with both fiction and non-fiction titles in various genres.
Need help downloading eBooks and eAudiobooks? We hold monthly eBooks workshops at all library locations. Phone the Information Department, or consult our programming schedule for dates and times.

Sign up for home delivery?
Our Visiting Library Service provides home delivery to any Guelph resident unable to come to the library due to illness or disability.
Library staff will select books and other materials for you according to your reading tastes or you may request specific items. A volunteer to deliver your material will be assigned to you upon request.
